If you like to dance and enjoy the energy of a good Latin beat, Zumba is exercise and entertainment. Instructor-led Zumba is a great cardiovascular workout based on easy-to-learn dance. Zumba simply proves that exercise can be fun.

Do I have to be Dr. Kasia’s patient to attend Bay Medical Center classes and programs?

No, all classes and services are open to the public, and you only pay for the classes and seminars you attend. However, choosing Dr. Kasia as your primary care physician will enable you to work comprehensively with your doctor on fitness, nutrition and weight loss programs and cosmetic procedures.

Where do I start with Bay Medical Center?

This depends on your greatest need. If you’re most interested in cosmetics, you can start there. If weight loss is your highest priority, you’re more than welcome to attend a nutritional boot camp and/or any of our exercise classes to get started on your goals. The key is getting started.

If I’m dieting and losing weight, why do I have to exercise?

When you are consuming fewer calories than needed to maintain your current weight, your body automatically slows your metabolism, so you burn less and less fat. It is your body’s way of preserving its supply of fuel. The only way to counteract this is to convince your body that it is not “starving” and force your metabolism to remain stable or speed up. Exercise is the best way to accomplish that.

Not necessarily. Moderate or intense exercise might actually curb your appetite for several hours. If this is not true in your case, you can counter a desire to overeat after exercise by consuming something low in fat but high in protein and complex carbohydrates.

How does exercise work to reduce hunger?

The hypothalamus, a gland in the brain, is your body’s hunger regulator. Moderate or intense exercise triggers the hypothalamus to release hormones that naturally suppress hunger. Even moderate exercise can trigger the release of enough hormones to raise the “hunger suppression effect” for up to 15 hours.

Muscle mass also increases metabolism. So adding muscle alone can improve your body’s fat-burning capabilities. Losing fat and exercising also can do wonders to improve cholesterol levels and adding a sense of well-being.
